The Pros and Cons of Teeth Whitening

Needless to say, the advantages of teeth whitening include possessing a charming radiant smile to dazzle everyone! After undergoing any method of teeth bleaching, you are sure to come out of it personally satisfied and more confident of yourself.

Teeth-whitening goes beyond just the mere fixing or reconditioning of your teeth and gums, it also lends that certain aura brought by the feeling of beauty and youthfulness.

Having whiter teeth makes you look undeniably more attractive. People take notice of perfect teeth just as they would a perfectly manicured lawn. People who have already had their teeth bleached experience the appreciation of others, making them less self conscious whenever they talk, smile, eat and drink.

It’s true, some might consider teeth whitening a vanity or a useless expense, but those who have undergone the procedure will ultimately tell you otherwise. Taking care of your teeth equivocally means having good hygiene and grooming.

On the other hand, teeth whitening processes have their own disadvantages. If you are sensitive to certain drugs and chemical compositions, it is best advised to have your dentist test you for reactions against the solutions used in bleaching teeth before you actually decide on the treatment.

Finding out your allergy long after the treatment has been done is probably one of the worst scenarios you can get yourself into. Patients have claimed to experience soreness in the gum area. Discontinuation of the treatment immediately stops the discomfort – proving that the bleaching solution had caused it.

Severe teeth stains and discolouration may not be cured or improved by teeth bleaching at all. It has been found that only 78% of patients who underwent teeth whitening considered the process completely effective. Simply put, that would mean 22% were not!

It would be wise to have a professional assessment from an experienced dentist so that you know what to expect. Your dentist should be able to give you good advice after thorough evaluation.

Other short-term disadvantages of teeth whitening include difficulty in using or wearing the mouth tray. When opting for at-home treatments, your dentist will make a special custom-fitted tray with the impressions of your teeth for use when applying the bleaching agent at home.

Some patients find it extremely uncomfortable to wear the tray as it is to be typically left in the mouth for several hours.  But then again, such discomfort is temporary and outweighs the advantages of teeth whitening on any given day.
